How can I help for the Holidays?

As the Holiday season wraps our senses in cinnamon scented candles, twinkling lights and toys for the kids, many may overlook the opportunity to give back to those less fortunate. It’s hard to go anywhere without walking past someone dressed in a santa suit ringing a bell and asking for donations. While the Salvation Army may be one of the most visible nonprofit organizations during the holiday season Oklahoma is home to more than 18,000 nonprofit organizations making life on the prairie a little brighter year round.

According to a report from Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits (www.oklahomacenterfornonprofits.org), “Oklahoma nonprofits contribute nearly $13 billion in revenue and hold more than $43.7 billion in assets. Oklahomans gave more than $2 billion to charities in 2013 totaling 5.6 percent of income. Oklahomans provide more than 85 million hours of volunteer service worth more than $2 billion.”

On a national scale more than 75 percent of all charitable giving comes from individuals. In 2014, 62.8 million Americans (25.3 percent of the population) contributed more than 7.9 billion hours of volunteer service worth an estimated $175 billion.
